the Proposal
June 21st 2008 -- On Saturday, he woke me up and blasted the song “You and Me” by Lifehouse and gave me a dozen roses for our 91st month anniversary. I’ve been sick the past week so I just thought he was just being really sweet and trying to make me feel better.
We went out to breakfast at Julius Meinl. As we were waiting for our food, I told him that I had a dream that he proposed (weird huh?!), but it wasn’t much of a proposal. We were on a cruise ship with my family, and as we were having dinner, he slid a box over to me and there was a ring – the one I wanted but with metal like wings above and below. I told him that I was sad that he just slid over the ring and didn’t ask me or go down on one knee. He just laughed, but apparently, I freaked him out a little bit. And he had to calm himself down so he wouldn’t blow it.
We went home and watched the Cubs/White Sox game and near the end of it (with the Cubs winning of course), we started to get ready for Jeff’s wedding at the Adler Planetarium. Jeff was an ex-coworker from work. He and Ryan still play softball together. We didn’t get an invitation, but Ryan had figured we were “add ins” since we really didn’t know him or his wife very well.
We took a cab to the Museum Campus and as we’re walking along, Ryan’s hand gets sweaty on me and he’s gripping it tighter than usual. And then while talking, he was breathing funny and he had short answers to my questions. I was half thinking that he would actually propose and then also thinking, no, he wouldn’t steal someone else’s thunder on their wedding day. We see about 5 wedding parties taking pictures farther away from us and he’s like, “Let’s sit over here.” We sat down looking at the view and talking about how this is definitely one of our favorite spots. Then he says, “I love you Beautiful”. I say it back. And he starts saying how he can’t wait til we move in. I kiss him on the cheek. And then he starts getting choked up. Everything happened so fast and I couldn’t believe he was actually proposing. Then, he got down on one knee and said more things (total blur), but I made out, “I hope you want to spend the rest of your life with me as well. Will you marry me?” Of course, I said, “Yes”. :)
At that point, I still thought we were going to a wedding afterwards. It turns out that Jeff got married two months ago. It was all a ploy! Haha!
He then had a whole evening of surprises! He had a limo come and take us to Tru. We did the 9 course Chef Collection and the food was sooo amazing! After dinner, he had a horse drawn carriage waiting for us. Babe, our horse, took us on a ride around the city. It was a beautiful night! After that, the carriage ride stopped us over by the riverwalk on Michigan Avenue. Ryan insisted that we take a short walk along the river...and we ended the night with a show of fireworks at Navy Pier.
